Before his security convoy encountered a drunk driver on the road, President Benigno S. Aquino III had dinner with several senators last Wednesday night in MalacaƱang.
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda described the President's meeting with the senators as a "purely social event."
"We confirm that the president had dinner with the senators, with the exception of Senators Joker Arroyo, Mirriam Defensor Santiago, Koko Pimentel, and Bongbong Marcos," Lacierda said. He said Senator Francis Escudero dropped by the Palace because he was celebrating his birthday.
"It was a purely social event," Lacierda said.
The President's private dinner with the senators triggered speculations that the ruling party was moving to oust Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile. The Palace, however, has reiterated that it supports the leadership of Enrile in the Senate.
The President was on his way home when the reckless driving of a certain Mark Hanopol happened.
Hanopol was arrested after trying to overtake the presidential convoy in Manila early Thursday morning.
The President remained safe in his vehicle as his police escorts brought the man to a nearby precinct. (yahoo)
