Darker Moon Tonight in Philippines - Penumbral Eclipse

The night sky may be a sight to behold for Pinoys tonight as the moon is expected to seem darker while entering a portion of the Earth's shadow.

"A penumbral eclipse of the moon will occur on Nov. 28 and 29, and it will be visible in the Philippines," Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in a statement early November.

The eclipse is expected to begin at 8:12 p.m Wednesday and last up to 12:53 a.m. Thursday.

The moon will not completely be out of view, however, as it will only pass through the outer region of the Earth's shadow where light from the sun is partially blocked.

During a penumbral eclipse "the lunar surface is not completely shadowed by the earth's umbra (darkest part of a shadow)," Pagasa said.

"Instead, observers can see only the slightest dimming near the lunar limb closest to the umbra," it added.

Pinoys will share the same evening spectacle with people observing the sky from Europe, East Africa, Asia, Australia, Pacific and North America.

It will be the last eclipse of the year and the third to be visible in the Philippines, following an annular solar eclipse in May and a partial lunar eclipse in June.

A total solar eclipse occurred earlier in November but was not seen in the Philippines.
