A speedboat reportedly owned by popular actor Aga Muhlach exploded while docked in a resort in Caramoan, Camarines Sur yesterday morning, leaving at least one person injured.
Senior Inspector Joselito Bermas, chief of police of Caramoan, said the twin-engine speedboat was totally damaged as fire engulfed the watercraft following the blast.
"The speedboat is no longer usable, it was totally damaged," Bermas told the Manila Bulletin in a phone interview.
The official said the speedboat was docked some seven meters away from the seashore near the Hunongan Cove Resort when the blast occurred at around 6 a.m.
During that time, Bermas said a boat operator, later identified as Jerome Pervera, was warming up the engine of the speedboat.
"He only sustained minor injuries - some burns in the body - as a result of the incident," said Bermas.
News of the explosion was the subject of talk in social networking sites with politics immediately surfaced as the motive behind the blast as Muhlach is running for a congressional seat for the 4th District of Camarines Sur.
But Bermas said the politics angle is unlikely and that the boat operator himself executed an affidavit saying the blast was an accident.
This was further confirmed by an investigation of the local fire department which stated that the blast and fire might have been triggered by faulty wiring on the engine.
But asked if indeed Aga Muhlach owns the speedboat, Bermas said they have yet to confirm the report, noting that only local residents have been saying that the speedboat belongs to the Muhlachs.
He added that the initial investigation revealed that Muhlach was not around when the incident occurred.
