Senator Juan Ponce Enrile hospitalized due to blood clot in his eyes.
Former Cagayan Congressman Jack Enrile confirmed that his father, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, was brought to the hospital after his eyes developed blood clots.
According to Jack, the blood clot, which they noticed last Thursday, had caused worries to his father.
“[My father] is fine. He underwent MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) yesterday just to rule out any suspicion,” Jack said on Saturday.
Jack also said that the doctors advised that his father undergo a thorough checkup, which Enrile passed.
Enrile is among the three senators facing plunder charges before the Ombudsman for allegedly channeling billions of pesos in pork barrel funds to fake non-governmental organizations (NGOs) set up by businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles.
During last Thursday’s Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing about the pork barrel scam, Ruby Tuason, the former social secretary of former President Joseph Estrada, reiterated what she wrote in her sworn statement that Enrile was sometimes present in her meeting with Gigi Reyes, his top aide, regarding pork barrel fund transactions.
Reyes was the former chief of staff of Enrile, who denied all the allegations against him.
Meanwhile, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, Enrile’s political nemesis, said that the mere presence of Enrile on occasions when his chief of staff, Gigi Reyes, met with Tuason is actually enough to prove his guilt in the pork barrel scam “to a moral certainty.”
Mentioning the principle of conspiracy in criminal law, Santiago said that Enrile’s mere presence is sufficient to prove that he approved of their illegal transactions over his pork barrel funds.
“Even assuming for the sake of argument that Enrile was just sitting or drinking coffee or smiling fatuitously, his mere presence is sufficient to convince the court to a moral certainty that he was the mastermind pulling the strings of Reyes, so that they could profit from the illicit scam,” Santiago said.
