Jose Paulo Calma denied involvement in mauling Vhong Navarro.
Businessman Jose Paulo Calma, one of the eight people accused by Vhong Navarro of attacking him inside Denice Cornejo’s condominium unit in Taguig City on January 22, appeared before the all-women investigating panel of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to deny the charges the actor lodged against him.
Calma, accompanied by his lawyer, swears to the truthfulness of his counter-affidavit during the hearing at the DOJ yesterday and denied participating in mauling Navarro.
The businessman, together with seven others, face charges of serious illegal detention, a non-bailable offense, serious physical injury, grave threats, grave coercion; illegal arrest and blackmail.
Calma claimed in his counter-affidavit that he was with two friends, fellow respondents Ferdinand Guerrero and Jed Fernandez, to meet other friends at Cornejo’s place with plans to go to a nearby bar to have a drink.
According to him, as he was nearing Cornejo’s unit, he saw his other friends led by Cedric Lee beating someone he did not recognize at first.
Lee told him they caught Navarro in the act of committing the horrible crime of raping Deniece and they were planning to bring the actor to the police.
Calma remembered telling Cedric’s group to go down to the lobby as the commotion was already attracting the attention of the other condominium residents.
“I am not a party to any of the crimes being imputed by the complainant against me since my only and sole participation in this entire controversy is being together with him in the elevator going down to the lobby,” Calma said.
On March 7, the DOJ set another hearing to receive the counter-affidavit of respondent Jed Fernandez.
