Philippines will acquire destroyers or frigates from Japan to boost its defense capability. The transfer of warships is very open as of what the Japan's new foreign military policy. (June 25, 2015)
The Philippines and Japanese defense officials are discussing a possible transfer of warships to boost country’s deterrence capability in West Philippine Sea, a Department of Defense official said.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity said “we have information that they will also give us a destroyer or a frigate type of vessel but I’m not sure if the weapons will be also included.” As quoted by Malaya Business Insight.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said the transfer of Japanese defense equipment is brought about by Japan’s new defense policy.
“Indeed the matter of sharing defense equipment and technology with other countries was something unthinkable for Japan previously. But recently, the Japanese have become more open to such possibility, something which dovetails quite well with our thrust to have access to equipment and technology available in our neighbors,” said Gazmin.
