Retired US Navy Admiral Warns China of Possible War in West Philippine Sea

Two US carrier strike groups started flight operations over the Philippine Sea yesterday, a day after a retired US Pacific Command commander warned China of a potential open conflict if it starts reclamation activities at the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal off Zambales.

Retired US Navy Admiral Dennis Blair, who aired the warning, also cautioned Beijing that it would be at the losing end should the current “shadow boxing” in the disputed waters turn into armed hostilities between joint US-Philippine forces and the Chinese.

“China would have no chance of winning in an event of a maritime clash, considering the setup of US and Philippine military forces in the disputed waters,” Blair was quoted as saying in an online report in AsiaMaritime.Net.

Panatag Shoal, located 120 nautical miles from mainland Zambales, is currently under de facto control of Beijing after it seized the shoal following a standoff with the Philipine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard in 2012.
