Former United States Coast Guard high endurance cutter USCGC Boutwell (WHEC-719) will be named BRP Andres Bonifacio designated as frigate in the Philippine Navy. BRP Andres Bonifacio will be joining BRP Gregorio del Pilar, BRP Ramon Alcaraz.
“The Coast Guard will transfer a decommissioned cutter, formerly known as the Cutter Boutwell, to the Republic of the Philippines in a transfer ceremony Thursday (July 21) at Coast Guard Base Alameda,” the US Coast Guard said.
Philippine Fleet commander Rear Admiral Bayani Gaerlan will be attending as signatory with prospective BRP Andres Bonifacio commanding officer Captain Brendo J. Casaclang.
US Coast Guard added that the decommissioned cutter was declared an excess government asset and is being transferred to the Philippines through the Excess Defense Articles program.
Philippine Navy spokesperson Captain Lued Lincuna earlier said that members of the first batch of the sailing crew for BRP Andres Bonifacio are already waiting waiting for deployment.
“We are expecting the delivery of this ship this year. [It will be an] additional asset for the PN and will be a big boost to our capabilities once it enters our inventory,” Captain Lincuna said.
