MANILA (Updated) -- Opponents of the controversial Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 camped outside the Supreme Court (SC) the night before the justices will hear the side of those assailing the law as unconstitutional.
The protesters came from the College Editors Guild of the Philippines and the Kabataan partylist, one of the petitioners against Republic Act 10175.
“Through this symbolic action, we want to show the SC and the government that the youth will watch every move the High Court makes, as it commences the oral arguments on the Cybercrime Law. We will sacrifice sleep and comfort to stand our ground,” said Kabataan party-list counsel Terry Ridon.
The youth groups constructed a photo booth in the vicinity, where participants can get their picture taken while holding a “status message” placard that states calls including “Junk Cybercrime Law” and “E-Martial Law, E-basura,” among others.
“This is not a mere gimmick. This is an expression of dissent,” said Ridon.
Tuesday's hearing will start at 2 p.m. with five lawyers selected from the petitioners opening the proceeding with their respective topics to discuss.
The Office of the Solicitor General, representing the Palace and Congress, will argue its case on January 22.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
