Team Sikat II from Philippines, the only Philippine representative for the competition took the third place in 2013 World Solar Challenge.
The World Solar Challenge is the most prestigious solar car racing event in the world, the Philippines bested Hong Kong, Turkey, USA and two teams from Japan by traveling a total of 2,487 solar kilometers. A solar kilometer is the distance traveled by a vehicle relying solely on the sun’s energy.
The winner of the prestigious competition is the Aurora Evolution from Australia, while Chile’s Antakari was declared as the second placer in the same category with the Sikat II of the Philippines.
The Philippine team competing in the World Solar Challenge were composed of mechanical and electronics engineering students and faculty member from the De La Salle University headed by Team Manager Dr. Alvin Culaba.
Aside from the students and faculty members from DLSU who developed the Philippine solar car, the team was supported by Sikat Solar Challenge Foundation, composed of representatives from First Phil Holdings, First Gen, Energy Development Corporation, Sunpower, Ufreight, Shell, and Motolite.
The World Solar Championships 2013 competition were composed of a total of forty-two (42) teams from twenty-four (24) different countries.(philnews)
