Duterte remarks on gang rape video became viral and trending online on April 17, 2016. "I should be the first". The video circulates online earning mixed reactions from netizens.
The video from an April 12 political rally was posted on YouTube on Saturday, and had been widely circulated by Sunday.
Here, Duterte narrated the pursuit of criminals in 1989, when 17 missionaries visiting a Davao City jail to hold Sunday service were taken hostage by prisoners, under the leadership of Felipe Pugoy, for almost 48 hours.
Soldiers then stormed the compound to free the hostages, but five of them were killed, along with 16 prisoners.
Australian lay missioner Jaqueline Hamill, 36, was among the dead.
“Putang ina, sayang (Son of a bitch, it’s too bad),” Duterte said his reaction was after seeing the latter. “Ang napasok sa isip ko, ni-rape nila, pinagpilahan nila lahat do’n. Nagalit ako kasi ni-rape? Oo. Isa rin ‘yun. Pero napakaganda. Dapat, ang mayor muna ang mauna (What I thought was, they raped them, they lined up for all of them there. Was I mad because she was raped? Yes, that’s one of the reasons. But she really was beautiful. The mayor should have been first).”
Still, some of his most ardent defenders insisted that what Duterte meant was that he should have been the first to kill the rioting inmates, and he was mad because the killers got to Hamill first.
